Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi
The first things that come to mind when we hear the term “Mechanical Engineer” are machines, engines and cars. Yes, we do it all and we do it right here. Mechanical is the oldest and one of the most evergreen branches of engineering. It has been there right since the beginning. It’s one of the most crucial branches for the development of the country. It’s the backbone of all industries. From the aeroplanes in the sky and ships in the oceans to small chips in your smartphone, all are the product manufactured and designed with the help of a mechanical engineer.
As mechanical engineers, we play with the power of engines in Energy Systems and aerodynamics of planes in Fluid Mechanics. We design small microneedles as well as large ships and rockets. We also change lives by designing prosthetics knees and medical equipment, through courses such as Biomedical Device Design. All the fancy words you hear on national geographic and discovery channel regarding planes and automobiles are day to day terminologies. As a Mechanical Engineering student, you will also learn to operate and use numerous simulation softwares such as AutoDesk Inventor, Dassault SolidWorks, ANSYS and MATLAB. Mechanical Engineering fundamentally involves understanding the practical aspects of systems, how to design them and ensure their smooth functionality. It involves lots of hands on work, ensuring you get to apply what you’ve learned in the class.
At IIT Delhi we have several fun activities and clubs to supplement your mechanical engineering curriculum. For the fans of F1, we have an automotive club where we build our own cars and participate in international formulae students’ competition. For all those who dream to fly we have aeromodelling club where we design and build RC mini planes. The Robotics club too involves immense contribution through the mechanical team, in design and development.
For all research-oriented students, IIT Delhi is one of the best places in India in terms of research projects. There are several research projects being pursued in the Mechanical department. This place acts as an incubator for the research-minded people. With a separate workshop and well developed labs, there are numerous opportunities for those interested.
Our department has a faculty strength of 50. The faculty are also occupants of different chairs of the Institute, which include the BHEL and NTPC. The mechanical department has 23 different laboratories. The department also houses an institute central facility on Rapid Prototyping. IIT Delhi is very well equipped with computational facilities and resources both in terms of hardware and software. The department has more than 250 computing systems and workstations loaded with wide range of software products covering all areas of mechanical engineering.
At last, I would like to say that make a wise decision and follow your passion. Congratulations for the selection in JEE Advanced and we hope to see you guys soon.
